It should come as no surprise that Jackie Hopson counts origami as one of her earliest forms of self-expression; her lingerie brand, Body Binds, calls back to that ancient Japanese art of paper folding with its sculptural quality and architectural lines.

Indeed, each of Jackie’s designs is a piece of art. The collection is a celebration of a woman’s curves; Jackie’s main objective with her line is to make all women, no matter their size, feel empowered and beautiful in their bodies. A woman’s underpinnings is her sartorial secret weapon. By wearing beautiful lingerie under even the most basic outfit, a woman’s confidence is transformed.

Jackie inherently understands that transformative quality that lingerie possesses. The design process is a poetic one for her and something that she luxuriates in. She says “I have never more embraced my true self and I’m finding that being me, finally, is opening so many unexpected doors.” She likens designing lingerie to “simply decorating art” as she views her role as a designer as “enhancing the female form.”

And her method of doing that is an innovative one. Most of Body Binds is created using neoprene, the flexible, rubber-like material that scuba suits are made from. She says she got the idea when she started experimenting with the fabric for her swimwear line and found the durable, soft, stretchy properties of the material fascinating - “it really brought out the nerdy designer in me.”

For her Black line, Jackie is able to use a special technique with the neoprene that allows her to make only a single cut for the entire garment. By combining that dedication to craftsmanship with her singular understanding of the female form, Jackie has created a lingerie line that is at once sensually delicate and innovativley engineered.

As is the case with all the best creative ideas, Jackie was inspired to start Body Binds during a period of self-growth after a particularly bad break-up. She’d began taking Pole Dancing classes as a way to empower herself by strengthening her body and challenging her comfort zone. She says that soon enough, pole dancing changed her entire outlook on life because it changed the way she viewed herself and the female form and Body Binds was born.

This focus came after years of professional uncertainty for Jackie. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, she says her only goal was to “become a successful designer in New York City,” but once she achieved that goal she realized she was “constantly searching for happiness and always felt something was missing.”

Finally, Jackie can truly say she’s both creatively and professionally fulfilled with Body Binds. While she laments the lack of a steady paycheck while working for herself (oh, the life of an entrepreneur!), she says she is constantly inspired by the creative folks surrounding her. She also loves the freedom that being an independent designer gives her - while she may be lacking in the sleep department, she more than makes up for it with the design opportunities it provides her.

With a recent move from NYC to LA, Jackie is excited about the evolution of her designs. She already has new ideas for her Lattice Collection, which is inspired by her Hawaiian heritage with the weaving pattern (similar to Hawaiian lauhala weaving). Feeling like a “kid in a candy store,” she says “I’m letting my surroundings inspire me to see where they’ll take me, so you’ll just have to stay tuned and see what’s next!” You can be sure of that, Jackie!
